Community Relations and Government Affairs

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) has been serving the community since 1886. Today, it is the largest school district in Wyandotte County and the fifth-largest in Kansas, serving over 21,000 students.
From Emmy Award-winning actor Ed Asner to NBA All-Star Lucius Allen and thousands of accomplished scholars, KCKPS has a proud history of cultivating talent and shaping futures.
Through the district’s signature Diploma+ program, students gain real-world experience at every level, preparing them for college and careers aligned with today’s global economy.

The Department of Community Relations and Government Affairs plays a crucial role in fostering and sustaining strong relationships and trust with families, community organizations, businesses, local leaders, and government agencies. We collaborate with the Kansas City, Kansas Chamber of Commerce, the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, El Centro, and many other organizations.
KCKPS also features a Welcome Center that provides personalized assistance with student registration and orientation. This process offers an important chance to connect families with vital services and resources across the district and the wider community. The Welcome Center collaborates closely with departments like Student Support Programs, Multilingual Education & Services, and Health Services to foster both academic and social success for every student.

Additionally, our Government Affairs efforts focus on building strong partnerships with local, state, and federal leaders to advocate for policies that support our students, schools, and community. By staying engaged with legislative priorities, we help ensure that our district’s voice is heard and that public education remains a top priority.
Please take a moment to visit the Government Affairs webpage to learn about the district’s legislative priorities.
Our main goal is to enhance the district’s presence and reputation in the community, making sure that families and partners are actively engaged in student success.
