Who are multigenerational professionals?

Multigenerational professionals comprise staff that span different ages or generations. From The Silent Generation to Gen Z, there are many different perspectives entering the world. When thinking about the different generations, think about how someone born in a particular time period had to go through in their formative years. 

What are the different generations?

The Greatest Generation 1901-1924

These people grew up during the great depression and were the primary group to fight in World War II. Those In this generation lived through the Roaring 20s, the Golden Age of Hollywood, and the Spanish Flu Epidemic. Famous members of the generation are Elizabeth II, Frank Sinatra, Sidney Poitier, and Joe Lewis

The Silent Generation 1925-1945

This generation were children during WWII. They grew up in a more traditional fashion, and focused more on home values. This generation saw the birth of the Soviet Union, radio, and unions. Noteworthy Silent Gens are Muhammad Ali, Bob Dylan, President Joe Biden, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

 The Baby Boomers  1946-1964

This generation grew up in the turmoil of the Cold War and saw the rise of the Cultural Revolution. Boomers tend to be team focused, loyal, hard working, and prefer face to face communication. Famous Boomers include Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Joel, and Presidents George Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.

Generation X 1965-1979

Also known as the "Latchkey Kids," people In this generation tended to be more independent than others. This generation was the first of the "day-care" kids since mothers moved more into the workplace. Famous Gen Xers include Robert Downey Jr., Tupac, Kobe Bryant, and Janet Jackson.

Millennials 1980-1994

Millennials grew up during the rise of computers, digital media, and 9/11. These people tend to be more independent and desire more socially responsible lifestyles. Millennials are very comfortable with technology. Famous Millennials include Kendrick Lamar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift.

Generation Z 1995-2012

True digital natives, Gen Z people are very competent and adapt quickly to new technology. These people communicate through social media and texts. Gen Zers have an entrepreneurial spirit and are more open to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Famous Gen Z-ers are Zendaya, Millie Bobby Brown, Lil Nas X, and Billie Eilish.

Generation Alpha 2013-2025

The newest cohort of kids are called Alphas. They grew up In a completely digital age where their parents also are tech savvy (parents are more than likely Millennials). This generation also includes kids who did virtual school during their primary years for the COVID 19 pandemic. As such, these Alphas are very adept at communicating online.

Each generation has general attributes. Like other aspects of life, it's important not to judge based on stereotypes, but it is helpful to know the about the challenges each generation went through to help shape their worldview.
