Inclement Weather Information

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools has four plans of action when inclement weather requires emergency action. Click on any of the plans below for details.

Plan A - Two Hour Delayed Start

School will start two hours late.
School will be dismissed at the regular time.
Part-day Early Childhood students will not report to school (full-day will still attend).
Morning extracurricular activities will be canceled.
Afternoon and evening extracurricular activities will be held as scheduled, unless otherwise announced.

What does “Plan A” mean for families and students?

Students will report to school two hours late.
Part-day Early Childhood students will not report to school (full-day will still attend).
School bus services will run two hours later in the morning.
Grab and go breakfast snack available for all levels.
Morning KidZone will be canceled.

What does “Plan A” mean for staff?

All school based staff will report to work two hours later.
Central Office, Nutritional Services, and Operations report to work at your regularly scheduled time unless you hear differently from your supervisor.
If you have a unique situation or circumstance that prevents you from reporting to work, please contact your supervisor.

What does “Plan B” mean for staff?

All staff will adjust their work schedule according to the closing of school as directed by their supervisor.
If you have a unique situation or circumstance that prevents you from reporting to work, please contact your supervisor.

Plan C - No School for Students - Central Office and North Central Office Open

All schools will be closed.
District Offices will remain open.
Morning extracurricular activities will be canceled.
Afternoon and evening extracurricular activities will be decided later in the day.

What does “Plan C” mean for families and students?

Students will not report to school.
KidZone will be canceled.

What does “Plan C” mean for staff?

All Central Office and North Central Office staff (including Custodians), Transportation, Central Kitchen, and Public Library staff report to work, except teacher contract staff.
Building administrators report to work.
Building Instructional and support staff do not report to work.
All employees deemed essential to recovery efforts will be contacted by their supervisors.

Plan D - No School - District Closed

All school campuses, district offices, and KCK Public Library branches will be closed.

What does “Plan D” mean for families and students?

Students will not report to school.
Morning extracurricular activities will be canceled.
Afternoon and evening extracurricular activities will be decided later in the day.
KidZone will be canceled.

What does “Plan D” mean for staff?

District administrators work remotely.
Building administrators work remotely.
Certified and classified staff do not report to work.
All staff deemed essential to recovery efforts will be contacted by their supervisors.

How decisions are made

Weather decisions are never made by one person or based on a single forecast. Our process includes:

Monitoring multiple weather sources and professional advisors
Having district teams out early checking roads in real time across different parts of the city
Coordinating directly with the Unified Government (UG) about road conditions and treatment plans
Collaborating with surrounding school districts to compare conditions and decisions

We weigh the timing and intensity of predicted snow, temperatures, visibility, and the safety of both neighborhood streets and main routes. We do this because students and staff travel from every direction and under very different conditions.
