Kansas Every Child Can Read Act (ECCRA)
The Every Child Can Read Act (ECCRA) is a Kansas law that helps schools ensure all students become strong readers by the end of third grade. The law focuses on early reading instruction, regular literacy screening, and providing support when students need extra help.
What this means for families
Under ECCRA, schools will:
- Screen students' reading skills regularly to identify strengths and areas where support may be needed.
- Provide high-quality reading instruction based on the Science of Reading.
- Offer additional reading support (interventions) for students who need it.
- Communicate with families about their child's reading progress and the support being provided.
What families can expect
If your child is receiving reading support, you can expect communication from the school that includes:
- A summary of the Every Child Can Read Act (grade 3 only).
- Your child's reading assessment results.
- Information about the reading support or interventions your child is receiving.
- How the school will monitor and share your child's progress over time.
Families are important partners in helping children grow as readers. Reading together at home, talking about books, and practicing literacy skills regularly can make a big difference.
