Medication Administration

The public school shall not provide students with aspirin or any other medication. Deciding whether any drug is needed is a form of diagnosis, and dispensing medication is a form of treatment. Administration of un-prescribed medications shall not be practiced by school personnel including school nurses. Over-the-counter medications should not be maintained on any school premises, including athletic areas, unless written parent permission to administer is obtained.

Over the Counter Medications

Non-prescription medications may be administered during school hours if they are in their original container with standardized, age/weight appropriate dosing information at parent or legal guardian request, for a specific, time-limited, intermittent condition. The parent or guardian must complete a Medication Administration form with written permission for school staff to administer the
medication.

The criteria or reason for providing the medication to the student must be specified (e.g. acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for menstrual cramps, hydrocortisone ointment for insect bites, etc.). Medications should only be administered for the condition stated on the Request for Medication Administration or Treatment form (e.g. acetaminophen for menstrual cramps may not be administered).

Prescription Medication Administration

Parents must turn in prescription medications into the school nurse. Prescription medications will not be administered to students without a prescriber’s order and a completed Medication Administration form. The order must be attached and turned in with the medication administration form. All medications must be in their originally labeled containers at all times.

Complementary and Alternative Medicines

Alternative medicines and/or treatments such as herbal supplements, homeopathic medicines, vitamins, salves, nutritional supplements, essential oils and any other products that are not regulated by the FDA, will not be administered at school.
