KCKPS Board of Education Invites Community to Help Shape District’s Future

The future of Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools starts with a conversation, and district leaders want the community to be part of it.
On Monday, October 19, the KCKPS Board of Education hosted a Listening & Learning session at the district’s Central Office, inviting residents and community members to learn about its new strategic plan and share feedback on the district’s future.
The session focused on the plan, adopted earlier this year, and the district’s priorities for the years ahead.
“The Board of Education really believes in hearing from the community and spending time with our community and residents to make sure we’re all on the same page,” said Board President Randy Lopez.
KCKPS’s 2026–2031 strategic plan, Roadmap to the North Star, aims to ensure every student graduates with a Diploma+ endorsement by 2031, without disparities by race or gender, while meeting or exceeding the state’s average graduation rate.
The plan outlines five focus areas: student learning and pathways; people and talent; supportive school climate; family and community partnerships; and safe, modern learning environments. Its mission is “Expecting Excellence, Inspiring Success, Every Student. Every Adult. Every Day!”
Lopez said he hoped the session would give board members valuable feedback and reinforce a shared commitment to student success.
“Some of the takeaways that I hope we get is that we are together, working on moving the district forward, working to make sure our students, our scholars have all of the resources they need, so that we can achieve those academic goals that we want,” Lopez said.
As KCKPS moves forward with its Roadmap to the North Star, district leaders hope continued community input will help guide the district’s priorities and ensure every student has the support and resources needed to succeed.
