KCKPS V.I.P. (Volunteer Impact Program)
“Partnerships are essential for helping students achieve at their maximum potential and while parent and community involvement has always been a cornerstone of public schools, greater recognition and support of these collaborative efforts is needed.”

- National Center for Safe and Supportive Learning Environments

VOLUNTEERING IN OUR SCHOOLS
KCKPS offers employees and community members numerous volunteer opportunities to connect with our students and schools. For more information about individual volunteer opportunities, contact Volunteer Services unless otherwise noted.  All volunteer opportunities in the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools will require an annual background check that should be completed 1-2 weeks prior to you working on a campus.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
Whether you want to volunteer for a one-time event or an ongoing basis, we have several options to meet your interests. Most volunteer opportunities take place at a school campus (elementary-high school) during the school day. All volunteer opportunities are coordinated through a volunteer opportunity lead at the district or campus level.

District or campus leaders that are interested in establishing volunteer opportunities  should complete the Volunteer Opportunity Request Form

  • Volunteer activities offer parents and community members opportunities to engage with their local school and support student learning. These experiences are mutually rewarding to students, parents, partners, and schools.  We are always looking for volunteers who are seeking to enhance our school success through positive youth development strategies which include:

    • Forging positive relationships
    • Strengthening academic, soft, and technical skills
    • Cultivating trustworthy, safe spaces for our students to grow
    • Collaborating with school partnerships to achieve goals and to help our youth succeed in meaningful ways.
  • Although, we want all individuals to support our schools, the safety of our students and staff is paramount.  To ensure that we are placing high-quality volunteers in our district spaces, we take every effort to screen with a high level of efficiency.  There are two background checks performed on all volunteers in KCKPS.  Our district utilizes Validity Screening Solutions to perform these screenings.

The first background check is the Criminal OmniSearch-7 which is a criminal record search ordered in each identified jurisdiction of residence for the past 7 years (standard).  Any newly identified surnames that fall within the 7-year period are also searched.

The second background check is the National Sex Offender Registry which conducts queries and searches on candidates to every official sex offender registry in the country based upon applicant data.  It is reviewed by Quality Assurance specialists to confirm identity and the completeness of the record.

    1. Check the KCKPS Volunteer Website for opportunities at our district schools.  If you are a part of a registered volunteer opportunity, the coordinator should have provided you with a code (position) that is unique to your group.
    2. If you do not see your volunteer organization or affiliate, please contact the building principal or district leader coordinating the volunteer opportunity.
    3. If the volunteer opportunity (position) is not posted, the campus principal or district lead will need to complete the Volunteer Opportunity Request Form to establish the position.
    4. Once the position is established OR if the position is posted, please submit the registration for Validity Background Screening through the appropriate position.
    5. Complete the registration and online verification form in the notification email you will receive.
    6. Allow 24-72 hours for background checks to clear.
    7. A Volunteer Clearance listing will be sent to the principal, district leader, or volunteer coordinator at each school site.
    8. All volunteers will be responsible for observing the training link for KCKPS Volunteers prior to starting their service in the district.
    9. GET STARTED and MAKE AN IMPACT!
  • “Volunteers can be a multifaceted resource in a classroom and throughout a school. For this to be the case, however, the school staff must value volunteers and learn how to recruit, train, nurture, and use them effectively. When implemented properly, school volunteer programs can enable teachers to personalize instruction, free teachers, and other school personnel to meet students’ needs more effectively, broaden students' experiences, strengthen school-community understanding and relations, enhance home involvement, and enrich the lives of volunteers. In the classroom, volunteers can provide just the type of extra support needed to enable staff to conference and work with students who require special assistance.” – Center at UCLA
