New for 2026–27:
TYCD Assessments
Kansas is re-thinking how students take the state ELA and math assessments. Traditionally, students have taken a single state assessment per subject at the end of the year as part of the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP). Beginning this year (2026–27), KCKPS students will participate in an assessment pilot that uses shorter assessments administered quarterly throughout the school year. The Kansas State Department of Education calls these Through-Year, Curriculum-Directed (TYCD) Assessments. In KCKPS, these assessments are aligned with our curriculum and will also serve as our quarterly district benchmark assessments.

As part of KSDE's Kindergarten Readiness initiative, all Kansas elementary schools are required to partner with families to complete the Ages & Stages Questionnaires®, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2). These tools provide a snapshot of children’s developmental milestones. As caregivers know their children best, they complete both questionnaires.
In addition KCKPS early childhood teachers evaluate their students using the Desired Results Developmental Profile as part of the requirements for HeadStart.
The Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) helps teachers understand children’s social-emotional development and readiness skills.

Students complete reading and math screeners in Fastbridge three times per year. These screeners help us to identify students who may need additional support due to dyslexia or other causes. We additionally screen students for social-emotional behavior problems, if the caregiver consents.
District benchmark assessments are used to identify students' progress towards mastery of important English language arts and mathematics concepts in the KCKPS curriculum. Students complete these assessments at the end of each quarter in grades 3-10.

Beginning in 3rd grade, students participate in the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP).
- English Language Arts and Math: Grades 3-8 and 10.
- Science: Grades 5, 8, and 11.
The Kansas Assessment Program includes an alternate assessment for special education students (Dynamic Learning Maps, or DLM).
English learners take the Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment (KELPA) each year until they demonstrate English proficiency. ELL students with specialized needs take the WIDA Alternate Assessment in place of the KELPA.

The state of Kansas offers the opportunity for all high school students to take the PreACT (Grade 9), ACT (Grade 11/12), or ACT WorkKeys assessment for free once during these grade levels.
The ACT and preACT assessments are predictive of student success in college and may be required for admittance at some colleges. ACT WorkKeys is a career readiness assessment.
